Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't major retailers stock cream chargers?

One of the main reasons why most high street retailers don’t sell the product is because of its links to misuse, know by other names such as whippits, laughing gas, hippie cracks, nangs and nos. The inhalation of the drug gives the user a short high. Since the Psychedelic substance Act 2016 came into force it is now illegal to sell Nitrous oxide for the purpose of misuse. To learn more about the laws and risks associated, visit our Health and safety page. It’s also important to understand that Nitrous Oxide is not for human inhalation and the risks involved in doing so. We do not condone the misuse of Nitrous Oxide in this way.

Does Tesco sell cream chargers?

No. Tesco’s sell the whipped cream dispenser and whipping cream but don’t sell the nitrous oxide cream chargers which are a fundamental part and without that the product is useless. This can be frustrating but our main suggestion is to buy online from major online retailers instead to avoid disappointment.

The closest product to cream chargers you’ll be able to buy at Tesco is ready-made dairy spray cream.

Does Argos sell cream chargers?

No. Argos does not currently stock any cream chargers or whipped cream dispensers. Again, we recommend ordering online from major online retailers to avoid disappointment.

Does Woolworths sell Cream Chargers?

No. Woolworths do not currently sell cream chargers or dispensers, which is likely due to misuses of the product. Woolworths do selling ready made whipped cream but not canisters of nitrous oxide.

Does Target sell Cream Chargers?

No. Target does not currently sell cream chargers or whipped cream dispensers. The closest product they sell is Reddi Whip, whipping cream in a can.

Does Walmart sell Cream Chargers?

Yes. Walmart sells both cream chargers and whipped cream dispensers. However, most of these are only available online and can be more expensive than other web retailers.

Can anyone buy cream chargers?

Depending on your country or state the restrictions vary from age restrictions to the time of sale. Here’s a brief global overview:

Australia – Laws vary from state/territory. However, most retailers enforce an +18 policy.  South Australia has implemented new rules regarding the sale of Nitrous oxide. Under the new Controlled Substances (Poisons) (Nitrous Oxide) Variation Regulations 2019

United Kingdom – +18. Must only be sold for catering purposes.

United States – The laws in the United States of America vary from state to state. Distribution and the sale of nitrous oxide to minors is a felony in the US. Misuse is also a felony but is usually classed as a misdemeanor in most states.

Extra information - Types of NOS

Choosing the specific type of Nitrous Oxide might seem like a complicated process but it’s really not. To start with you have 3 main types, and only one of them is relevant for use with food.

Pharmaceutical Grade Nitrous Oxide

This medical nitrous oxide is 99% pure. Only chemical supply company or a gas companies can purchase this grade. This grade of the NOS is widely used in medical and dental anaesthetic applications.

Food grade Nitrous oxide

This is the most readily available form of Nitrous Oxide, in the form of cream chargers for whipping cream and other culinary needs. You can buy these from mini marts, kitchen shops and Online! This grade is also the most misused unfortunately.

Auto grade Nitrous oxide

This is used in cars to be injected into the engine, allowing it to output more power. This type of N2O almost always has hydrogen sulphate (A Rotten egg smell) added to it to stop recreational users.

Canister size

There are also 3 main sizes/formats of canisters. 8g, 16g and tanks. Most people are likely to only ever need the standard 8g cream chargers.

8g Canister

These canisters are the most readily available being vastly manufactured and fit nearly all whipped cream dispenser on the market. The products advertised above are perfect for this.

16g Canisters (Double Chargers)

These are double the standard weight for NOS canisters, simply holding more. However, not all dispenser fit this product and most require a threaded dispenser. Generally they’re not worth the hassle as they’re harder to source and can be more expensive. They are not necessary for most domestic purposes. Eg: Whipping cream

Tanks

Tanks of compressed NOS are generally only used in medical centres , ice cream vans and ect. Only medical facility’s, chemical companies and catering companies to get them refilled. Only experienced individuals should use these products. If you knock the valve off a large tank it can blow through a wall. There are many other risks surrounding tanks of Nitrous Oxide.
